The Board of Directors

The governing structure of the OBS consists of a Board of Directors, comprised of eight directors made up as follows:

  1. A judge or retired judge selected by the Board who will also be the independent Chairman of the Board.
  2. Three directors being representatives of the banking sector in South Africa, nominated by the Board of the Banking Association.
  3. Four directors, independent of the banking sector in South Africa, nominated by the Board of Directors.

The function of the Board is to:

  1. Ensure and protect the independence of the Ombudsman by acting as a buffer protecting the Ombudsman against improper pressure brought to bear by the financiers of the scheme.
  2. Ensure that the scheme is adequately resourced. This means that the scheme has sufficient human, financial and operational resources funded by the participants in the scheme to enable the Ombudsman to function efficiently and timeously.
  3. Appoint and renew the appointment of the Ombudsman.
  4. Receive and approve the Ombudsman's Annual Report.
  5. Approve changes to the scheme's Terms of Reference.
  6. Liaise closely with the Ombudsman on a regular basis.
