OBS warns consumers to be wary of 'festive' criminals

8 December 2004 - South African Broadcasting Corporation

The Ombudsman for Banking Services (OBS) and the Banking Council of South Africa have again warned consumers that they may become targets of criminals during the festive season. Bruce Manuel, an OBS spokesperson, says most consumers have extra cash at this time of year and could become the targets of criminals.

Manuel says the Ombudsman receives more complaints over the festive season. "Criminals tend to step up their game at this time of the year, so we have seen a trend of increasing complaints and it is evident that criminals come up with new ways to scam people," says Manuel.
Manuel stressed that people need to notify the bank immediately if their card is lost or stolen. Complaints should be lodged with the banks that they belong to.
