Where is the rest of my money?

Nomsa Matjila went to withdraw R1 000 from a Standard Bank ATM but she says the machine only gave her R300.

She was shocked to find that the withdrawal slip showed she had drawn R1 000 even tough she only got R300!

Nomsa explained the problem to the bank. The bank manager told her to fill in a claim form and that she would get her R700 refund after the matter had been investigated.

But when she called the bank to find out if her claim was successful, she was told they could not refund her. She approached Daily Sun for help.

What I did: I spoke to Erik Larsen at Standard Bank's head office. His report said:

  • Investigations showed Nomsa had withdrawn different amounts on the same day.

  • There was nothing wrong with the ATM

  • There was no evidence to show that her card had been tampered with

  • Therefore the bank had to conclude that Nomsa withdrew the R1000

  • Nomsa was not happy with the bank's report.
  • Unfortunately I can't argue with the bank's report. Nomsa was advised to take her complaint to the office of the Banking Ombudsman who will check whether the bank complied with the law.
