Re-establishment of communication links

19 April, 2007

The offices of the Ombudsman for Banking Services (OBS) have, for all intents and purposes, been cut off from the outside world since 8 April 2007 following the theft of equipment including computer servers and the telephone PABX system during an armed robbery of the premises.

The robbery occurred after hours so fortunately no member of staff was injured. The robbers overcame the security guards on duty. Numerous other tenants of the building, 28 Harrison Street, were also affected by the robbery.

The OBS has managed to re-establish temporary, albeit intermittent e-mail systems but is still without any telephone services.

The share call number 0860 800 900 has been rerouted to the call centre that the OBS shares with other ombudsman services, so members of the public will be able to leave messages. New complaints may be directed to that number.

It is anticipated that it will be some time before normal services are restored. The insurance claim is still being processed. Bank customers wishing to check on the progress of their complaints are requested to be patient.

Adv. John Simpson, the manager: complaints adjudication said, “We have suffered a severe setback due to the theft but we will endeavor to deliver the excellent service we are known for, as soon as possible. The assistance of the media in informing persons who had dealings with the OBS of the position would be greatly appreciated.”
