Penelope Beck holds a BA (Law) LLB from the University of the Western Cape and a certificate in the The Financing and Management of local infrastructure Initiatives from UCT and the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. Penelope was admitted as an attorney in 1992 after completing her articles at Jan S de Villiers and Son, Cape Town. She lectured Welfare Law at the University of the Western Cape before entering the NGO sector, where she served the Legal Resources Centre, the Housing Consumer Protection Trust and the Black Sash, amongst others. Penelope is a past Director of the NHBRC, Member of the Estate Agency Affairs Board, Member of the Film and Publication Board, Gauteng Rental Housing Tribunal, Member of the DTI Consumer Affairs Committee and Member of the Lotteries Charities Distribution Agency. Penelope is currently a Member of the National Consumer Tribunal, an Adjudicator at CSOS, Chairperson of the Social Assistance Appeals Tribunal, a Director at the Ombudsman for Banking Services, a Member of the Office of Disclosure of the Department of Human Settlements, a Director at One Climate Fund and an Associate member of INSITE, an organisation focusing on social and economic development of communities. Penelope is a practicing attorney at Beck-Paxton Attorneys.
