This week the Ombudsman for Banking Services South Africa hosted the 12th annual conference of the International Network of Financial Services Ombudsman Schemes (INFO Network).


The conference  hosted  92 delegates from 27 countries representing 36 financial ombudsmen from all over the world, from 30 September to 2 October.  


The INFO Network conference is a platform that provides delegates with an opportunity to share information, knowledge and experience, allowing ombudsman schemes to benchmark themselves against current international best practice in the industry.


Karen Stevens, insurance and financial services ombudsman congratulated the OBS on its successful hosting of the INFO Conference and also expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty, diversity and cultures of South Africa, a sentiment echoed by many of the foreign delegates who attended.


As host of the conference, Reana Steyn, the ombudsman for Banking Services South Africa, commented that it was an honour to have been entrusted with the responsibility to host the auspicious event.


“It was a privilege to learn from international colleagues to ensure that our local alternative dispute resolution services deliver services in line with international best practices.”


Steyn said it was necessary for ombudsman services to stay informed about consumer issues  all over the world as well as the challenges faced by service providers in financial services and their  impact on ombudsman services. “The one common thread that came through a number of the sessions, is that ombudsmen need to ensure that they remain relevant and keep up with the changes in financial services and consumer behaviour and demands.”
